Description of Our School
This new high school, although supported by the West Valley School District, is available to all youth, grades 9-12, in the Spokane vicinity. The curriculum of this new Project-based high school will encompass all required subjects for high school graduation within the framework of technology, outdoors driven by an entrepreneurial mind set. The focus of this project-based curriculum will be on rigor, relevance, relationships, teamwork and leadership - developing marketable communication skills, citizenship, and life skills, as well as learning the essential knowledge and skills in the core subjects as outlined by the state. Students leaving the program will have successfully met state requirements for graduation, have passed the WASL and be college ready. Students will also have the option to earn many of the following certifications:
WFA: Wilderness First Aid—a 16-hour class providing an in-depth study of first aid and saving human life and limb in the wilderness.
MOUS: Microsoft Office User Specialist Certification
A+ Certification: Computer Technician Certification
Macromedia Digital Design Certification: Macromedia is currently developing a certification process.
Our first school year began with a “leadership camp” wherein the students completed a three day "boot camp" in the outdoors learning essential leadership and teamwork skills. They then applied these new skills at the five day "technology camp" where they developed their school identity. Using state-of-the-art technology and software, students completed essential projects needed to complete THIS web site. The school name, mascot, colors, motto, government and logo were developed as a result of the careful mix of Relevance, Rigor and Relationships throughout the leadership camp.
RiverCity Leadership Academy successfully engages students in learning by setting high academic standards and provide rigorous, meaningful instruction and support so that all students can meet them. The Project-based structure makes it possible to give students individual attention. The advisors take an interest in students' lives, drawing on their real-world experiences and current understandings to build new knowledge. Teachers also show students the connections between success in school and long-term career plans. The combination of Relevance, Rigor and Relationships is truly the key to improved student learning.
